COM 1113 Blog Post 2

For this blog post, I was unsure about what exactly I should photograph to depict various aesthetics. While walking through The Point, the idea came to me to have the shuffleboard table as my subject matter. I did my best to capture a variety of photogenic aesthetic elements from the shuffleboard table. I was able to express lines, rule of thirds, depth, detail, and viewpoint.

Lines
In this shot, my thought process was to utilize the long, wooden vertical lines on the table's playing surface to draw the viewer's eye to the 4, which is the intended focal point. If the lighting was increased, I would have attempted to focus on the other numbers to provide another line.

Rule of Thirds

In this shot I was attempting to adhere to a vertical rule of thirds with the playing surface and the edge of the table. I guess you could say this picture also has a depth perception with the playing pieces in the foreground as well as in the distant background. My one issue with this picture is I would crop it tighter on the right side and the bottom, to eliminate some of the negative space.

Depth
For this shot I arranged some of the playing pieces on the surface of the shuffleboard table to create a depth perception effect. In hindsight, one thing I would change about this picture is that I would capture it from a much lower angle, as this picture was taken roughly at eye-level.

Detail
For this photograph I zoomed in very close to capture the detail on one of the shuffleboard playing pieces. The design on the piece looks like a spiderweb pattern to me, and I wanted to capture that effect. The one thing I dislike about this picture was the lighting, as the shadow of my phone is visible here.
Viewpoint
For these last 2 pictures I wanted to get a new perspective on the table's woodwork and exterior frame from its base. I like how the wood is 2 separate colors and has some repetition on the underside of the playing surface. I also like how the table's colors and patterns contrast with the floor.

People in The Point must have thought I looked like a crazy person photographing the shuffleboard table. This table is one of those inanimate objects that has great detail and color patterns, making it very photogenic. I think this assignment gave me a new way to view static objects that I would normally not notice.
