COM 1113 Blog Post 1

Hello and welcome to my blog for my Communications 1113 class! I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it, and I hope to be able to know many of you as well!

Some Background Information on Who I Am
My name is Peter Stratta, and I am a freshman at High Point University. I live in nearby Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and I am a journalism major. I was born on July 4, 1998, and have lived in Winston-Salem since I was 3.

What are my interests?
I have always had a deep passion for reading, especially history books. Over the recent Christmas break, I was able to start and finish 3 books! My passion for history is eerily similar to my paternal grandfather's love for history, as I am particularly fascinated by American History and the story of our great nation.

In addition to my love for reading, I have a passion for writing as well. My dad is a well accomplished surgeon and published author, so I like to think that I inherited some of his writing genes.

Other than history and writing, I am a diehard fan of NASCAR racing. I can say that my passion for NASCAR grew from seeing the movie Cars when I was younger, and I have been a lifelong race fan ever since. I have been to many races at many different racetracks, as I attended my first race in 2012. My all-time favorite driver is Tony Stewart, and I can proudly say that I have had the chance to meet him as well as many other racecar drivers.

I am studying journalism at HPU in order to hopefully combine my passions for writing and racing into becoming a journalist for NASCAR. In the past year, I have been writing for a sports news website's NASCAR page, and from that came the opportunity to cover many races over the past season as a reporter. I have witnessed the most recent races at Charlotte and Martinsville from the track's media centers, getting an up-close encounter to the life of a racing journalist.

Other than racing, I have a strong passion for the game of golf. Although I am far from a professional level golfer, I would gladly play a round of golf with family or friends at any time. 

I love meeting new people
Part of my excitement for coming to college is the chance to meet many new people from many places and backgrounds. I love making friends with all kinds of people, and I hope to become friends with more than one person reading this post!

For my first picture I have Dale Earnhardt Jr talking to some people, however there is a kid looking at the camera. The main subject matter is in fact Earnhardt Jr, but the kid is a distracting element. Therefore, I cropped the kid out of the image, and then using a layer on Photoshop I drew over Jr and increased his brightness. He now stands out more pronounced from the background and other people in the image. Original image was taken by me at the NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

For my meme, I incorporated the winner of the recent Daytona 500, Austin Dillon, along with a ghosted mask of Dale Earnhardt Sr. 20 years ago, Dale Earnhardt took car number 3 to victory lane in the 1998 Daytona 500, a race that he had failed to win for 20 years. 20 years after that historic win, Austin Dillon, grandson of Earnhardt's longtime car owner Richard Childress, took the 3 back to the Daytona 500 victory lane.   To create this meme, I took a picture of Dale Sr. and masked out the background. Using the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop, I selected the picture of Dale, and transposed it into a picture of Austin celebrating. I then added top and bottom text to the photo with text boxes. The original photos as well as the final product can be seen below.

COM 1113 Blog Post 6

In this week's blog post, we were told to photograph something with a variety of contrasting colors, and use those colors to create swatches of different hues and nameplates in inDesign. For my subject, I chose to photograph Dale Earnhardt's racecar from the 2000 NASCAR All-Star Race. This car is on display at the Richard Childress Racing Museum in Welcome, North Carolina. I chose to photograph this car in particular because of the many colors on its paint scheme. For my color swatches, I chose the majenta, orange, and green colors found in the racecar's paint scheme. I then adjusted the amount of whiteness in their hues to 50% and to 25%. For the name plates, I inserted my name, and my title at the NASCAR news website I write for. For each element, I used a differing color from the swatch that came from the original picture of the racecar.
